ADDICTION "The goal is to conquer your addiction, right? But what does that really mean?"

We are all addicted in some way. Since it is normal and necessary to habituate certain actions, repetitive behaviors range on a continuum from healthy habits to severe compulsions. When the addiction leads to positive behavior, there is no problem...

RECOVERY "Recovery is your journey back from addiction. The path is always unique, and never comes with an instruction manual."

I use the term 'recovery' to mean the Process of Acquiring Skills to deal with your life, without the reliance on the drugs or behaviors to artificially bolster you...

SOBRIETY "Sobriety does not mean abstinence. Traditional treatment programs for addictive behaviors often confuse these two terms."

Abstinence is the avoidance of consumption, whereas sobriety is a condition of control. AA would have you believe that abstinence is the only road to sobriety, and for some it is...

GOALS "The goal is to conquer your addiction, right?."

The approach I offer is to help you learn to acquire feelings of joy or satisfaction from the more typical activities of life. My goal is NOT necessarily to have you stop your drug or addictive behavior - 100% as would be required from all 12 step programs or those who treat...

AN OPEN LETTER TO DR. MARC

Dr. Kern,

My name is (name withheld to protect anonymity) and I was involved with 12 step progams for 2.5 years (For all of which, I remained entirely abstinent). My involvement in AA was not that of someone standing on the outside looking in. Rather, I was a model AA member.

I originally went to a detox center in Garden Grove, Ca. and ended up at a "Low-Bottom" recovery house in Anaheim, Ca. I lived there for 17 months, per direction of the house owner, whom was also my sponsor. This recovery house was very militant and cult-like. I became completely institutionalized, though, I didn't know that when I was there. It is only in hind sight that I can see that.

I did EVERYTHING I was told to do. I got a sponsor and went through all of the steps. I could quote the big book like nobody's business and was very proactive about "helping" other people get sober. I was involved in some sort of AA activity every single day of those 2.5 years. So as far as I was concerned (and everyone around me was concerned), I was doing everything necessary to stay sober and remain a positive member of the program.

At about 2.5 years sober, I finally felt secure and courageous enough to step out of AA. I had no idea how brainwashed and indoctrinated I was until I stepped outside of the program.

I could go on for days about my experience in this area and the negative implications suffered from my involvement in AA. However, my experience in AA also produced positive effects. It separated me from my old behaviors long enough to develop new behaviors.

It was about 1 year ago that I left AA and I have never felt more free and have never been more dependency free. When I left AA, I quit smoking and I quit over-consuming caffeine. I have also discovered that I am able to drink on occasion in appropriate social settings without any cravings or uncontrollable impulses to drink myself to death, as promised by 12 step literature. I have also remained entirely drug free. I have tapped into, and fully exercise, my inherent power of choice. I have discovered a limitless source of strength and power within my own being that I was not aware of previously.

Dr. Kern, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the work you are doing. I only hope that more people find methods such as yours before ending up in a 12 step program. If there is any way that I can get involved, please let me know. I would love to help in spreading the message of self-empowerment in any way I can.
